Each of these authentic Murphy "In-a-Dor" bed is complete

 - fully functional -
- absolutely useable -

Some have minor surface soil, some may have a bit of paint or other "personal touches" and patinas acquired during many years of satisfying and active use.
Each bed has a unique and "timeless" personality that goes along with its rich history.

NONE of these beds has been defaced, modified, or "renovated" in any way that affects its value as an antique, or its functionality as a fully usable and practical piece of furniture.

Each bed comes with all hardware - no broken or missing parts.
Each is ready for many, many more years of vigorous use.

These Murphy "In-a-Dor" Beds were carefully removed from a turn-of-the century apartment building in Central Southwest Washington State and are offered by the owner, who prefers they go to a single buyer.   These are authentic American antiques from the early 1900's: manufactured in San Francisco by the original Murphy Bed Company, and originally installed, as a lot, direct from the factory, into the building from which they have been removed.

While these beds have "been around" for nearly 100 years...they've only had one loving home.

These rare, antique Murphy "In-A-Dor" Beds are offered for acquisition well below the current market value, and well below the price of new, modern, and suddenly re-popular "murphy-type" cabinet or wall bed "knock offs" that sell for thousands of dollars each... yet still dominate the room!

They are also offered well below the cost of modern "murphy bed" -type mechanisms available to carpenters, woodworkers, do-it-yourselfers, and custom cabinet-makers, who then must construct the "wall cabinets" into which the bed mechanism must be installed.

These are not "cabinet beds" or "wall beds" or "flying beds"
These are the original, patented (1912-1916)

Murphy Bed

A Brief History of the
Murphy "In-a-Dor" Bed

 "...the bed that love built..."

The Murphy "In-a-Dor" Bed was invented in 1900  by
William Lawrence Murphy (1876–1959), a San Francisco bachelor, who later formed the world-famous and still operating Murphy Bed Company of New York, America's 2nd oldest furniture manufacturer.   Murphy patented his "In-A-Dor" bed design, but he did not trademark the name "Murphy Bed,"  so anyone can (and many have) made generic "murphy beds" over the last 100 years...

But the passion and romance that inspired Murphy's Original "In-a-Dor" Bed
is as alluring as the "space saving" phenomenon they introduced...

It was 1900...Victorian-era San Francisco.  Murphy, a bachelor, lived alone in a modest one-room apartment.  He became smitten with a "fine young lady" from a "good background" whose father was an engineer for the San Francisco cable cars.  She was an educated opera singer, and he intended to court her, but courting customs in Victorian days would not permit a lady to enter a gentleman's bedroom, so the young lady was forbidden to visit Murphy at his home.

Murphy began to tinker with the notion of a "hide-away" bed and soon invented the Murphy In-A-Dor Bed ....because he fell in love!

With his new invention, he could safely stow away his bed, and hide it completely out of sight, thus transforming his one room apartment into a proper parlor in just a few, easy and fluid steps... and so was then free to have a female caller!

Murphy eventually married his opera singing sweetheart, and continued to develop his passion for experimenting.  He built a successful and enduring company which is still in business today, and which, over the years, produced various "Murphy" space saving contraptions, including the "Murphy Kitchenette."
