extended access to an Internet-connected computer.
Students who do not have a personal computer may use the pubic access computers
in the Penrose Library.
Information about other campus computing labs is at http://www.du.edu/uts/helpdesk/labcover.html
LIS students may also use the computers in
the LIS Collaboratory.
Instructions and permissions for accessing the LIS Collaboratory are available
from dr. twining twining@intertwining.org
A limited number of laptops for student use (one week checkout) are
available. Contact dr. twining twining@intertwining.org

All students must configure their computer for remote access to the Penrose Library before first class meeting.
All LIS students must also register in the appropriate Course Blackboards before first class meeting.
All accepted and enrolled LIS students must subscribe to the libschool-L distributed email list before first class meeting.

LISA, the Library Information Student Association website and email list: http://www.du.edu/LISA
1. All new students registering for courses
at University of Denver are automatically provided an account on the DU computer
system.
The DU computer system is called Agora. Your Agora
account includes a username and password
your username is usually your first initial and first seven letters of your last name, but may be different if you have a common name
your @du.edu email address. will be yourusername@du.edu
your webspace will be at http://www.du.edu/~yourusername. Your webspace will be empty until you configure it.
You will use your Agora account to access many DU virtual resources, including the many electronic resources available through the Penrose Library, the DUnet drives http://www.du.edu/uts/helpdesk/DUnet.html, and the advanced technologies used in the LIS program.
It is important that you learn about your Agora account, and learn to use it early in your program of study.
Students are expected to learn to use their DU accounts outside of regular class meetings.
Advanced applications and special technologies used in individual classes will be taught as part of that class.
Students who need assistance may request it from LIS program's technology peer mentors or faculty, and are encouraged to contact the LIS program office at (303) 871-2747 to request this assistance, or to sign up for a group technology orientation session.
It is recommended that you perform the following tasks as soon as you are a registered student and BEFORE you begin your coursework:
Getting started with your DU computer account:
2. If you do not know if you have a DU computer account (or you can't remember your username or password) look yourself up in the DU email directory at http://www.du.edu/findit/findem.html. If you're listed in the directory, you have a DU computer account.
If you do NOT have a DU account, OR if you cannot remember your password, either:
call the DU Technology Services (UTS) Helpdesk at 303-871-4700 or
email them at support@du.edu
and ask what your username and password are. You will likely reach voicemail and should be prepared to leave detailed information (your name, social security number, return phone number) for a returned phone call.
Write down your
username and password and save them
somewhere safe and convenient.
You will need them to
proceed, and no one in the Library School will know them for you.
If you
forget your username or password, go back to #1 and start again.
3. After looking yourself up in the DU directory, if you learn that you do NOT have a DU computer account, AND if you are unable to activate a new account by calling the UTS Helpdesk, use this form to Request an account. Complete the form, keep a copy, and either FAX , mail, or hand deliver the original to the DU LIS office, to the attention of dr. twining, for signature. A faculty signature is required. We will submit the form for you. It will take about a week for your account to be activated. After a week, go back to #1 and start again.
The LIS program office is at 2135 E. Wesley Ave., Ste. 103 Denver CO 80208. MAP.
The LIS program office FAX number is 303-871-3422
3. If you have problems with your DU account, contact the UTS HelpDesk FIRST, then contact the LIS program office at (303) 871-2747 for advice.
Once you have your DU account, or while you are waiting for it to be activated:
4. READ all the help documents at
http://www.du.edu/uts/helpdesk/helppage.html
and
http://www.du.edu/uts/helpdesk/documents.html
to get oriented to the DU technology environment.
5. If you do not already have them on your computer, download and configure QVT and browser software from http://www.du.edu/uts/helpdesk/qvt.html. Read the help files for these software programs and become familiar with their functions and use.
6. Familiarize yourself with the Unix account FAQ at http://www.du.edu/uts/uts/helpdesk/faqs/accountfaq.html
7.Establish a connection to the DU computer system from off campus by following the instructions at http://www.du.edu/uts/helpdesk/connect2.html
Remote access to Penrose Library
Visit the Penrose Library website at
http://www.penlib.du.edu/.
Read and following the instructions under "remote access" for
connecting to the library from off campus either through the DU modem pool or
through the library proxy server.
Register for your Class Blackboard
Blackboard
is the DU webcourse platform which includes document repositories, forums,
chats, online testing, etc.
All LIS courses incorporate the use of Blackboard, each course may use the
Blackboard differently.
Students must manually register for access to the Blackboard for each individual
class in addition to registering for the class itself. There are no
registration fees for using Blackboard. Enrollment in the class Blackboard is NOT done automatically with enrollment in the course
itself.
Students must have a DU computer account and know their username and password
to do this.
If you are not familiar with your DU computer account, return
to #1 above.
Read and follow the instructions in the Blackboard newuser orientation document at http://www.du.edu/blackboard/newuser.html
Students MUST enroll themselves in their course Blackboards each quarter.
